Mentorship

About the Program:

HTI Scholars at the First, Second, and Comprehensive Exam stages of the PhD are assigned a Mentor. Mentors are tenured faculty or administrators with at least seven years of teaching experience. They coach scholars through exams, help navigate program requirements, foster networking, and provide support as needed. The HTI Mentor Selection Committee assigns Mentors based on the scholar’s enrollment packet to ensure alignment in the field of study and background.

Requirements:

  • Once assigned, Mentors and scholars must complete the Online Mentoring Training on Brightspace before attending the in-person Art of Mentoring workshop. This workshop takes place at the HTI Professional Development Conference in late June. Access details for the Brightspace course will be sent by email.
  • For NEW mentorships, the Mentor is expected to visit the scholar’s institution to meet with the scholar and key institutional leaders, such as the advisor, program director, or dean. The purpose of this visit is to collaboratively craft a plan addressing the scholar’s academic goals, professional development, and specific support needs. The scholar coordinates this meeting in collaboration with the Mentor.
  • For continuing mentorships, while not required, scholars are encouraged to visit their Mentor’s institution to gain firsthand experience in a different academic environment.
  • Mentors and scholars are expected to meet monthly to discuss academic goals, share updates, address challenges, and exchange guidance.

Required Reports:

  • Mentors and scholars must submit a Meeting Report by November 30.
  • NEW mentorships must submit the report after the meeting with institutional officials.
  • At the end of the academic year, Mentors must submit the End-of-Year Report, and scholars must submit the Annual Confidential Evaluation by April 30.
  •  To access reports, visit Forms.
  • To become an HTI Mentor, submit the Mentor Profile form.
